The Zodiac Sun Star Signs

When swanky disco enthusiasts used to flirt in bars over the famous opening, “What’s your sign?” they were looking for compatibility based on the Sun sign. Partly because it’s the most influential and partly because it’s the most convenient, the position of the Sun in the sky is the single most referred to factor of the astrological chart.

The astrological year begins in the spring, and the first sign is Aries. Each sign is associated with one of the four Elements, a ruling planet, and a set of personal traits that broadly describe the individuals born while the Sun resides in that constellation.

Aries- A Fire sign, ruled by the planet Mars, the Ram can be a tough customer. More oriented to action than words, Aries signifies the rugged courage that it takes to butt horns or gallop across steep mountainsides.

Taurus-An Earth sign, the bull can be the quintessence of stubbornness, but also the paragon loyalty. Ruled by Venus, Taurans crave security in a relationship above all else. The Bull tends not to have much use for crowds, preferring to graze quietly and mate for life. But don’t get in Taurus’ way!

Gemini-Ruled by Mercury, this constellation represents the tragic and heroic pair of twins, Castor and Polydeuces. Part god, part human, Polydeuces was immortal, but his brother Castor lacked eternal life and died. Taking pity on them, their father Zeus installed them in the halls of heaven. An Air sign, Gemini’s are talented communicators, bipolar, multifaceted, and often mysterious.

Cancer-Ruled by the light of the Moon by which it emerges for a midnight snack, the Crab is skittery, erratic, and, of course a water sign. That tough shell protects a delicate interior from the ravages of love and life.

Leo-Lit by the Fire of the Sun, Leo is a proud and powerful sign, a cuddly cat to friends and lovers-and vicious beast to those who dare to cross the Lion.

Virgo-Proud and untouchable, the Virgin is special and knows it. An Earth sign ruled by the planet Mercury, there can be no better ally in time of need than a Virgo.

Libra-Symbol of balance, the Scales are ruled by the planet Venus. Librans specialize in intimate relationships and soothing violent energies. An Air sign, Libras bring understanding and peace to volatile situations and prefer to mate for life.

Scorpio-Ruled by the dark Lord of the Underworld, Pluto, Scorpios are another sign not to crossed. Wise in the ways of murky mysteries, Scorpios work on many level and often have an insight that shocks and frightens other signs,

Sagittarius-The Archer was a revered sage and king of the race of centaurs, half horse and half man. Shot by a poisoned arrow, the gods could give him eternal life in the stars, but could not heal his pain. Jupiter, King of the Gods, is friend to this Fire sign.

Capricorn-Ruled by Saturn, the Goat is likely to buck all the way to the top of the mountain. Firmly grounded in Earth, Capricorn is often wealthy in material things but lacking in emotional security.

Aquarius-Contrary to common misconception, the Water-Bearer is actually an Air sign, ruled by Uranus, god of the sky. Keeper of the secrets of the soul, Aquarians will play an major part in the dawning of their Age.

Pisces-Ruled by Neptune, the Fish are, like the Twins, intensely bipolar creatures, torn in either directions by their opposite poles. A Water sign, of course, Pisces swims upstream in a sea of fantasy and sometimes makes it real.
